"[SJ] has been absolutely dedicated to tailoring the course to fit the students. They are continually observing our engagement in class discussion and adapts their teaching methods ever so slightly so that they can be as appropriate as possible and we can learn the most that we can" - Feedback from a student
I am a versatile and experienced teacher, mentor, and advisor. I have taught students in philosophy, AI ethics, politics and international relations, biotechnology, the application of AI for environmental risk, and sustainability leadership at the LSE, University of Cambridge, University of Groningen, University of New Hampshire, and VU Amsterdam. I have achieved consistently high teaching evaluation scores, including a perfect 1.0 student satisfaction score teaching global justice at the LSE. I also helped to develop the world's first Master's programmes in Global Risk and Resilience at the University of Cambridge.

In addition to my university teaching, I also mentor and supervise students and professionals pursuing high-impact careers through Magnify Mentoring, the Effective Thesis Project, the ERA fellowship, the CHERI summer fellowship, and Non-Trivial, as well as facilitating on the AGI Strategy and Frontier AI Governance courses with BlueDot impact. Before my PhD, I worked for 5 years as a private tutor for secondary school students and lifelong learners, specializing in economics and helping students from underrepresented backgrounds apply to highly selective universities. I was the Educational Development Advisor at Insight Education, working to improve the quality of their curriculum for high-achieving students from marginalized backgrounds and to provide high-quality training to tutors. I have also been an Associate Tutor at Woodbrooke Quaker Study Centre, delivering courses on Political Engagement and Sustainability.

My teaching practice is built around three core principles:
  1. Constructive alignment: I ensure my students learning activities are closely aligned with course aims and assessment criteria so that their activity is always purposeful consistent.
  2. Social learning: Students learn best when they learn together, so I prioritize facilitating constructive student to student interactions within a strong narrative structure that gives them meaning and purpose. If I am supervising one on one I try to position myself as an equal explorer who is there to learn as well as to teach.
  3. Holistic feedback: I provide iterative feedback that encourages students to see their learning tragectory as a whole, highlighting areas of progress and suggesting ways to improve. This gives students high quality personalized feedback and encouragement to engage with comments to improve their future performance.
I have a Post Graduate Certificate in Higher Education and am a fellow of the Higher Education Academy. I received a class teacher prize for philosophy at the London School of Economics, as the best class teacher in the department that year.
"[SJ] is always willing to go the extra mile for every student. They provide rich, remarkably beneficial feedback to both coursework and queries of any kind in an exceptionally timely manner. They structure their classes in a way which is beneficial to all learning styles, and encourages class participation and involvement in a way which exerts no excess pressure upon students, and makes classes innovative and enjoyable. I believe that they are an exceptional teacher, with an inspiring interest in this subject area." - extract from citation for LSESU Teaching Excellence Award nomination
"From all the teachers I have had over the years, they have had the most detailed, wide ranging and interesting knowledge. As well as factual knowledge, they also teach in a way that would further our skills in terms of writing methods for the module and allows us to infer our own reasoning by making us understand a point from different angles" - Feedback from a student
